Self Study Tip 1: Put On Comfortable Clothing

If you're going to be sitting down for long periods, and be studying most of the day, then it's essential that you're in comfy clothing so you can remain focused and have a positive mindset. It is also important that you choose a workplace that is comfortable to you and you will be able to go there whenever you need to study.


Self Study Tip 2: The Pomodoro Technique

The pomodoro technique is a technique invented by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980's and it is where you break down studying into small chunks rather than studying for hours on end. This is proving to be much more productive to students and it generally consists of twenty-five minutes of work, followed by a five mintues break. This is known as doing one pomodoro. After atleast four pomodoro's you should have a longer break to regain some energy. Note: These times can be adjusted to fit in with your own concentration time. Before you start a revision session, you should write down everything you know about the topic you're about to study. This is helpful in two ones; the first way it is helpful is that it reinforces your knowledge of the topic and helps you remember these facts. Secondly, it will give you insight as to what you need to study in your study session which will hopefully make your studying more productive.

If you've just written an important essay, or you have digital study notes then it can be beneficial to paste them into google translate then press the speaker button to read them out. This will check for mistakes and also you can record the text-to-speech voice with Audacity so you can play back the important information when you need it. This is especially helpful if you're a good auditory learner.


Self Study Tip 5: Study On The Move

Studies have shown that studying whilst doing small amounts of exercise can be helpful as it increases blood flow, improves memory and makes you more happy throughout the day. To make this most effective, you could find three essential facts, then repeat them in your head whilst doing a short walk/jog/star jumps then after return and see if you can remember the three key pieces of information.


Self Study Tip 6: Challenge Yourself

Make sure to challenge yourself and reguarly test your own knowledge by posing questions, tasks and quizzes. This will help you consolidate the knowledge in your help and will make sure your memory retains the knowledge for longer. Alternatively, You can write short questions on post-it notes and stick them around your house with the answers on the back and whenever you come across one, you must answer it. If you answer it wrong then make a duplicate of that question and post it in another location so you will have two of the same questions to make your mind force-recall the information.

Having a good attendance is important as it will help you succeed with your studies. If you're too ill to go into school for one day, then ask a friend if you can copy their notes or ask the instructor for the information you missed. Make sure to be a proactive learner, this not only looks good to teachers/instructors but it also helps you succeed.


Self Study Tip 8: Timed Exam Questions

In the exam you will be on a time limit so you will need to write quality answers within a short timeframe. Normally, you will see how many marks each question is worth in the exam. This is usually an indication to how much time (in minutes) you should spend on that question. Time yourself to answer some exam questions and see if you can write a quality answer within the minutes the question's mark is worth. This will help you structure your answers and help you know what to write.


Self Study Tip 9: Memory Techniques

Use study methods that will help trigger your memories. For example, mnemonics are a great way to remember information as it gives the informtion an association, which is a great learning method and is good for memory retention. Alternative methods are chewing an exotic flavour gum whilst studying, then again before the exam so it triggers the information you stored during the study session. Another method like this is to spray a scent such as peppermint whilst studying and before the exam.


Self Study Tip 10: Stay Organized & Plan

Being unorganized can lead to you be further stressed. That is why it is a good idea to organize all your study notes into subjects and topics so you always know where they are and how to locate them. Furthermore, it is good practise to plan your revision times and to stick to the times you allocate. Try to plan according to how well you focus at different times of the day- this may take some trial-and-error attempts to find your optimum cognitive time.
